Festivals in August in Tuscan-Emilian Appenines

During the summer months, the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines comes alive with colors, sounds and joy. The cool climate and relaxing landscapes make it the perfect place to retreat to during the summer months: it is precisely in this period that the villages organize numerous festivals and events which attract tourists from afar.

In the town of Toano, in the province of Reggio Emilia, from the second half of august you can enjoy pleasant moments of celebration and enjoy the local gastronomic delights.

 

Summer events in Toano

During the last weeks of August in the village of Toano there are 2 local folkloristic events: the Festival of San Rocco and the Potato Festival.

The Feast of San Rocco takes always place on August the 16th in the village Monzone and composes of a religious moment followed by the village festival. From lunch time until the night you can be entertained by the gastronomic attractions and the music and dance shows.

The Feast of the Potato is held in the historic center of Toano during the first Saturday of September (this year it falls on September the 3rd); for the occasion there are musical shows and it is possible to taste the recipes of the gastronomic tradition of the Reggio Emilian Apennines.

 

The potato cake

The potato cake is a typical dish of the Apennine cuisine, strongly linked to the simplicity and authenticity of the rural world. The preparation of this recipe is very simple: it takes just a few ingredients to serve a unique dish.

Serves for 6 people:ricetta-torta-patate-locanda-due-querce

  • 3 Kg of potatoes
  • Oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 2 Hg of lard
  • 2 Cloves of garlic
  • 3 Stalks of rosemary
  • 1 Butter Walnut
  • 3 Hg of grated pecorino cheese (or Parmesan)

How to prepare it:

Peel the potatoes and make them boil in salted water, then work them with a potato masher until you get a soft puree. Put the oil in a pot with lard, garlic and chopped rosemary. Combine the puree with the sauce and add salt, pepper and butter. Mix everything and then add the pecorino or parmesan cheese.

Cook the mixture for ten minutes on low heat into a buttered pan; with the help of a lid, turn the mixture and cook for ten more minutes.
