Horse riding in the Tuscan-Emilian Appennines

Horse riding near Reggio Emilia and Modena

Horse riding is an activity that reconciles us with the nature that surrounds us and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines perfectly meets this need, either for the facilities and the environment. In the area of Cerredolo of Toano, locality near Toano, not far from Modena, you can visit us at the Locanda Le due Querce, which is immersed in a lush forest about six hundred meters high with a small church.

Locanda Le due Querce allows you to stay with every comfort, immersed in silence and tranquility and with a locanda-le-due-querce-pensione-cavallo (2)breathtaking view of the river valley of the Emilian Dolo, Secchia and Dragon. Last but not least, the surrounding territory, rich in art and secular history, can be easily crossed on horseback through the bridle paths.

There are several paths passable on horseback or walking and, among them, it is really worth trying the Paths of Matilde. On the way there are shaded areas and refreshment for both hikers and horses. The Matilde paths are inspired by grancontessa “Matilde di Canossa”, a prominent female figure in the Middle Ages.

The Matilde trails on horseback

These trails start from Rupe Campotrera, in the homonymous nature reserve between the red volcanic caves, to the viewpoint of San Pellegrino in Alpe on the Apennines. Along these paths you will meet monuments from the eternal beauty, including the Castle of Canossa, surrounded by ravines (deep furrows in the ground), and the Pieve di Paullo which is a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture.

The horseback trail will take you to the Castle of Sarzano and the Castle of Carpinete which -with its medieval fortifications- was the preferred accommodation of Matilde, and the Oratory of Our Lady of the Snow, with its seventeenth-century wooden cross.
