In just over half an hour by car, you have the opportunity to reach the city of Scandiano, rich in historical and artistic elements: the oldest remains found in the town date back to the Neolithic era.

This fantastic place was described by Giosuè Carducci, in the lyric entitled “A Scandiano”, as the land of the wise and the poets. One can not help thinking that, in the walls of his famous castle, Matteo Maria Boiardo was born, count of the city and one of the most famous literati of the fifteenth century.

MATTEO MARIA BOIARDO AND ITS HEREDITY

Matteo Maria Boiardo is the author of “Amorum libri tres”, a collection composed of 180 texts and divided into three main parts: the first in which a couple in love rejoices in feeling a sensation of love reciprocated, the second in which the woman he betrays man, and in the last one he has the attempt of spiritual elevation. He also wrote the famous chivalric poem “L’Orlando Innamorato”, in which he narrates fantastic stories of duels, loves, magic and fantastic adventures, already very appreciated at the time in the city of Ferrara.

Le-due-querce-locanda-marzo18-2The family of Matteo Maria Boiardo lived in a historical period between 1423 and 1560 in one of the most famous places in the city, the Rocca of Boiardo. Initially built for purely defensive purposes, it dominates the historic center and has great artistic and cultural value. The many changes that the building has undergone over the centuries make it possible to combine different styles: medieval, renaissance, baroque and modern.

In addition to the Rocca of Boiardo you also have the opportunity to visit the Castle of Arceto. It is a well-preserved medieval building where the circuits of the graves and walls are still visible, with traces of the drawbridge, the ravelin and the pusterla tower. Inside are the village, the oratory dedicated to San Rocco and the real fortress, the heart of the military defense of the castle.

For a few years the Rocca di Scandiano and the Castello di Arceto have been part of the Castelli Matildici and Regti Courts circuit. With the aim of promoting and enhancing eredity on a historical and monumental level, the Municipal Administration has provided for a wide period of opening of the two Castles with the possibility of guided tours. The buildings will be open to the public every public holiday from 10.00 to 13.00 and from 15.00 to 19.00.
