Among the many places of culture you will have the opportunity to visit the Estense Gallery in Modena. It was established in 1854 by Francesco V and placed in 1894 in today’s Palace of Museums. Equipped with four halls and sixteen exhibition halls, it is entirely dedicated to the artistic heritage accumulated by the dukes of Este since the glorious years of the Lordship in Ferrara.

The present works belong to different centuries, in a particular way they are included from a historical period included from the XIV to the XVIII century among which there are:

  • The piety of Cima da Conegliano
  • The Madonna and Child of Correggio
  • The Portrait of Francesco I d’Este of the Velazquez
  • The El Greco Triptych
  • The marble bust of Francesco I d’Este by Bernini
  • The Crucifix by Guido Reni

You can also visit the Estense Gallery in the Palazzo Ducale in Sassuolo. The latter was born in 1634, when an old castle was transformed into a ducal residence: it became a prestigious place to be used for summer holidays and official representation of the court. The commission of its reconstruction is due to Francesco I d’Este. The palace is full of fountains and green spaces and for this it has been nicknamed “La Delizia”, a pillar of Baroque culture in Italy. The last Estense Gallery in the city of Modena is located in the Lapidary Museum, the city’s first civic museum.

It is rich in antique collections and excavation finds from different ducal territories including Brescello and Novellara.
